Indie anthem against self-doubt and for self-empowerment

“But there must be something more”: On November 11, 2022, indie pop artist, singer and multi-instrumentalist Irina Kühn aka Plain Folly will release the first song from her upcoming album “Tales Of A Hundred Thoughts”. With “Breaking Clocks” Plain Folly succeeds in creating a furious, passionate indie anthem against self-doubt and resignation – a graceful song, somewhere between Phoebe Bridgers, Tori Amos and Florence + the Machine and a hopeful, enveloping soundtrack for dark autumn evenings.

“Time goes by and I feel that my life is not going the way I would like it to. And what do I do? I try to ignore it and smile it away,” says Irina Kühn about the first song she ever wrote for Plain Folly. Pushing drums, evolving piano and her pervasive vocals, despite all the serious memento mori mood, nevertheless spread a stirring carpe diem thought: my life belongs to myself alone. Self-empowerment has rarely sounded so captivating.

lyrics

LYRICS:

You turn the hourglass round and round
Pretending that your world’s still safe and sound
You smile, your back’s against the wall
And you try so hard to turn a blind eye to it all
We’re all supposed to be someone else
We’re all supposed to feel something else
They say a little rain has got to fall

But there must be something more
It’s slipping through your hands
Feel it in your fingertips
This could be the end
And waiting for the dawn
Won’t clear your sight
Breaking clocks won’t change a thing
And it won’t stop time go by

Am I supposed to be someone else?
Am I supposed to feel something else?
I refuse your shell but I’ll get nowhere
Throwing punches in the air

For there must be something more
It’s slipping through your hands
Don’t you feel it in your fingertips
This could be the end
And waiting for the dawn
Won’t clear your sight
Breaking clocks won’t change a thing
And it won’t stop time go by

(Breaking clocks won’t stop time)
(Breaking clocks won’t stop time)

We shouldn’t take it all for granted
So afraid of losing ground
Don’t you think it’s time to pull the trigger
Break the cycle, turn it all around
I hear it ticking but I’m helpless
The sand are finally running out
And I know it’s time to pull the trigger
To break the cycle, turn it all around

Turn it all around
Feel it in your fingertips
This could be the end
And waiting for the dawn
Won’t clear your sight
Breaking clocks won’t change a thing
And it won’t stop time go by

Go by
And it’s slipping through your hands
Breaking clocks won’t change a thing
And it won’t stop time go by
Breaking clocks won’t change a thing
And it won’t stop time go by

about

Plain Folly Stuttgart, Germany

Plain Folly is many things. Unadjusted, thoughtful, sometimes dreamy, sometimes eruptive. But she is always DIY as fuck. To the heart, to the beat. Her songs are healing studies in introspection, bittersweet hymns to the strength within ourselves, but also confessions to our own weaknesses. But above all, they are one thing: insanely good, dreamy, inspiring indie pop. ... more
